In 1948, the Pumpkin Papers came to light as the House 
Un-American Activities Committee announced that Whittaker Chambers, a former communist spy, had produced microfilm of secret documents from inside a hollow pumpkin on his Maryland farm.  (Chambers claimed he had gotten the documents from former State Department official Alger Hiss - a charge Hiss denied.)
